May 18, 2002 Regular Meeting Minutes

President Jack Pearson called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.

Old Business:

Reviewed and approved the minutes from the March 12 regular meeting.

New Business:

Ken Reynolds provided an update on the Parks Committee:

1.       Benches have been repaired in Armstrong Park
2.       Benches have been re-stained in Vickers Park
3.       Power will be add to Armstrong Park nearer to where the Christmas tree is located.
4.       Proposal discussed to modify the play area and the park in general to better use the space.

Julie McGraw is chairperson of Yard of the Month Committee – please send nominations to Julie.

Trina Binkley announced Capitol Heights won the Betty Fitzgerald award for dedication to beautification of our neighborhood.

Ken Reynolds asked that everyone carry a trash bag while walking the neighborhood to help keep it clean.

Frank Powell Announced the Old House Expo is from 1 to 5 pm on May 19th in the Garden District.

Mark Russell presented the financial report.

Andrew Gerachis from the Montgomery Tree Committee was our guest speaker for the evening.  Andrew commented that Capitol Heights is well positioned to decide what it wants to do with Armstrong and Vickers Parks.  The city will help us develop the parks. He indicated resources are available, such as grants from Alabama Power, to help beautify the neighborhood.  Comments from the floor indicated we would like to see the utilities buried along Madison Avenue, since it is a major entrance into the downtown area. Mr. Gerachis indicated that would be expensive, but not impossible. Alabama Power Foundation has annual $3,000 grants for tree planting.  He recommended we develop a long range plan for what we want our neighborhood to look like and the city and other resources would be willing to make it happen.
